CHARACTER INFORMATION
NAME: Ari Nökkvason
CANON: Axis Powers Hetalia
CANON REFERENCE: Right here
AGE: 15
GENDER: Male
YEAR IN SCHOOL/FACULTY POSITION: HS2
APPEARANCE: ( Visual ) Ari is fairly tall and slender, standing at just above 5'7. He still has some baby fat in his face, but other than that, he's a skinny guy, with a lack of muscles to boot. His hair may look silvery, but it's really platinum blond, and he has gray-blue eyes to round out his Nordic visage.
PERSONALITY: Ari is quiet. That is simply the most noticeable thing about him. He doesn't talk much, and even when he has to, he tends to say things in the fewest words possible. The biggest reason behind this behavior is that he's shy, and getting a bunch of words out to have a conversation with a stranger makes him anxious. He feels like he'll be judged for a multitude of reasons, either because he said something stupid or because his accent sounds funny or who knows what else. Being in his tender teenage years, he's pretty insecure about himself. Again, about how his accent sounds, his height (if he stands above anyone, it makes him stand out!), his lanky awkward frame, etc. Due to his introverted nature he never shares these feelings with anyone, and even then, he sees admitting those kinds of faults as a weakness, and the last thing he wants to be is weak. He has a bit of a nervous constitution, meaning he stutters when nervous, and if too shocked or surprised with an unbearable amount of stress, he'll faint.
He protects these more delicate feelings and mannerisms with an emotional shell. Ari will act cold and apathetic to those who get too close, wanting to stay emotionally distant from people. He doesn't quite understand other people too well, and his so-called shell also covers for that. He doesn't have to get to know people and understand them, he can just ignore them, and they in turn can ignore him too. He says he doesn't care. For the most part, he might, but there always is a part of him that cares what other people think about him. Except for people he deems as idiots. Ari can be a bit of a snob, especially when it comes to his intellect. He'll easily get irritated at people and tell them they're stupid for not being able to figure something out or not catching a hint.
Beyond his prickly exterior, Ari isn't all that bad. He just has his methods of self-preservation, even if they can come across as being mean sometimes. However, it is never his intention to be outright mean. He might come across and grumpy or ornery, or, again, snobbish, but he never wants someone to dislike him for being a jerk. He's just awkward and doesn't want people to know. He doesn't want to make anyone upset, and if he does? He'll back pedal, or change his mind - something to keep the other person from being upset. He has no issue with helping someone as long as it's for a good cause, too. These are just more sensitive qualities that he keeps hidden under his mask of apathy. Besides, if he keeps everyone an arm's length away, and doesn't let too much on about himself, it makes him cool and mysterious, and that might make people be interested and not mean and judgmental. And Ari doesn't have to put in the emotional investment for an actual friendship to have people like him.
Although, another thing he keeps hidden behind his 'mask' is his explosive temper. While there isn't a set thing that will make him mad every time, pushing his buttons can easily send Ari into a screaming, shaking rage. Thankfully, since he's normally such a mellow guy, he can't sustain bursts of temper for very long, and will stomp around and storm away moments after being upset, only to have his energy wind down and he'll go back to normal or get sleepy. But no matter how angry Ari gets, he will never hurt someone. He can fuss and stomp or be apathetic or snobby all he wants, but as his core, he's very gentle. He just wants to protect himself from people knowing and taking advantage of him.
POWERS/ABILITIES: Zoolingualism and Animal Empathy. The former being the more dominant of the two. However, due to where he grew up, Ari's abilities are limited mostly to mammals and birds, and even then, most mammals he could talk to were farm stock and common pets, as well as a few seabirds. With proper training and focus, he could branch out into larger kingdoms of creatures and their subgroups. As far as empathy goes, it's not very strong, so much that Ari himself doesn't typically notice any shifts in his mood around certain animals: for example, he might feel a bit more perky when around an excitable dog, or more relaxed around a house cat sitting in a sunbeam. On that note, it's easier for him to consciously pick up feelings of herd animals, such as sheep, as the feeling gets multiplied.
AU HISTORY: Ari was born in Iceland, to a Norwegian mother and Icelandic father. It was there he grew up with his parents and older brother, Sigurd, although they would take annual trips to their mother's native Norway. It was a fairly easy-going life; their parents worked and the boys played. They were both rather adventurous, but Ari wouldn't mind following his brother along all day if he had to.
His parents put him in playschool so he could be socialized with school children before he started compulsory classes, and unfortunately, he didn't take to it or make any playmates, but his parents couldn't withdraw him from the program, since they both worked and had no one to watch him. Sigurd took it upon himself to watch his little brother after school, an arrangement that pleased them both.
When he was six years old, his father relocated the family to Skåde, a suburb of Aarhus, Denmark, where he was going to start work. Ari was upset about this dramatic change and in turn, clung more to his older brother, who was the most familiar piece of home that he still had. Unlike living in Iceland, he sort of gained a friend, however - a boy who lived nearby, Vilmar, who was around Sigurd's age. It was mostly a "friends by proxy" relationship, as Ari was really more of the eager tag-along in the trio's adventures, but they all got along fine for the most part and would terrorize the neighborhood as young boys do.
Though Ari still wasn't one hundred percent comfortable in his new environment, but he managed to cope through escapism - mostly by reading a lot and playing pretend.
Living in a small suburb like Skåde didn't offer a bunch of opportunities for excitement, so it really all depended on the boys to make their own fun when they wanted to be entertained. Being a tag-along was okay with Ari until he started to get a little older, near the pre-teen age. Sigurd and Vilmar were growing up and leaving him behind and it felt awkward for Ari since he couldn't relate. They were both changing, Ari wasn't. Not to mention, sometimes Vilmar would just be mean for no reason! So he started to pull away from their group a little, hanging back more to read or play with the neighbor's cat or talk to the cows in the pastures. Even if hanging around animals was a fairly normal thing for him to do on his solo adventures, Ari did notice when things started being "abnormal" in that regard.
Now, while he grew up speaking Icelandic, he had learned some Norwegian from his mother, and was forced to be taught Danish in school. He knew what learning a foreign language was like, and it started to feel just like that when he would hang out with the local cows. Or any of the neighborhood animals, for that matter. He was hesitant to ever speak back, but after a few months of awkwardly eavesdropping on whatever creature he passed, he finally decided to test things, and properly greet the cows when he walked by them after school one day. And he heard them greet him in return. It was a little frightening, but also pretty neat, Ari thought. However, even for as harmless as his newfound ability was, he kept it from his family so they didn't think he was a basket case.
After a peculiar incident with Sigurd and a tree growing in their yard overnight, Ari accepted the fact that he was probably like his brother and had a mutation, but he still kept mum on the subject, because what did it matter anyway? He wasn't harming anyone, or the animals. Though honestly, he was scared of what would happen if he mentioned it. Plus, he didn't want to be like his brother. He wanted to stand apart! This was the beginning of where Ari figured he should be more independent and self-sufficient in case anything happened. Not to mention, he wasn't a baby anymore, and he could take control of his own life! He also began to develop an emotional 'shell' to protect himself, since being outwardly sensitive seemed a dangerous route to take, especially with bullies around. This new route of being apathetic and detached was easier to grow accustomed to, having started going through puberty and changes being common.
Ari's solo lifestyle wouldn't last forever - in fact, really a mere several years, before being told that he would be sent overseas with his brother, as it'd be a better place for him than staying behind in Denmark. Ari wanted to know why, and he was told it was because his brother was going and insisted that his little brother come along. This sparked a difficult and awkward conversation of his parents becoming aware that Ari was gifted with an 'unnatural' ability, and it cemented his parents' decision to send him and his brother to The Institute. Ari was very unhappy with the decision, but had no choice but to comply.
